Fun Facts about Geography

Fun with maps, is one of the interest that developed in me as a student during Geography classes, that later grew when watching "Big Bang Theory" where Sheldon Cooper used to highlight "Fun with Flags" and this topic has been on top of my head ever since. It is always good to understand and remember all important graphical divisions of our planet earth, like mountains, continents, oceans, lakes, rivers etc. in all parts of the globe.
I have always been marking each topic of my interest, in a good atlas, to familiarize myself with the names of relevant geographical importance that I want to remember.
Continents:
We have 7 continents and below are few pointers on them -
Continents – 7 : (Based on Size) Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, Australia.
Continent with largest number of countries – Africa.
Continent without desert – Europe.
All major civilization in Asia, apart from Egyptian Civilization in Africa.
Oceans:
We have 4 oceans and below are few pointers on them -
Oceans – 4 : (Based on Size) Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Artic.
Rivers:
Amazon – S.America.
Nile – Egypt (Africa).
Lakes:
Largest salt water lake – Caspian Sea (Europe).
Largest fresh water lake – L.Superior(N.America).
Mountains:
Alps – Europe
Atlas – Africa
Kilimanjaro – Africa
Apalachian – North America
Rockies – North America
Andes – South America
Ural – Asia/Europe
Water falls:
Niagra water falls – North America
Iguasu water falls – South America
Angel water falls -South America
Other important Geographical Facts:
1) Lowest road - Highway 90:
Dead Sea Highway, is the lowest road in the world, which is a section of the Highway 90 located in the Dead Sea, in Israel. At this point, this highway is the lowest road in the world. Highway 90 is the longest Israeli road, and links Metula and the northern border with Lebanon.
2) Marco Polo(1271AD) – Traveler from Venice:
Marco Polo, September 15, 1254 – January 8, 1324 was a Venetian merchant, explorer, and writer who travelled through Asia along the Silk Road between 1271 and 1295. His travels are recorded in The Travels of Marco Polo
3) Only active volcano in Europe – Mount Etna:
Mount Etna, active volcano on the east coast of Sicily. Mount Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe, its topmost elevation being about 10,900 feet.
4) Amazon Rain-forest – South America:
The Amazon rainforest, covering much of northwestern Brazil and extending into Colombia, Peru and other South American countries, is the world’s largest tropical rainforest, famed for its biodiversity. It’s crisscrossed by thousands of rivers, including the powerful Amazon.
5) Tasmania:
Tasmania is an island state of Australia. It is located 240 km to the south of the Australian mainland, separated by the Bass Strait. The state encompasses the main island of Tasmania, the 26th-largest island in the world, and the surrounding 1000 islands.
6) Lowest place – Dead Sea:
The Dead Sea has the lowest elevation and is the lowest body of water on the surface of Earth. For several decades in the mid-20th century, the standard value given for the surface level of the lake was some 400 meters below sea level.
